Explore the relationships among individuals, groups and societies around the world. Bucknell sociology & anthropology majors conduct faculty-guided research locally at the Coal Region Field Station or abroad in nations such as Botswana, Cameroon, Samoa, Morocco, Spain, Ecuador, India and China. Shoot and edit an ethnographic film, take a class with inmates at a correctional institution, or lead a seminar discussion on mental health and ritual healing. Our graduates are prepared for jobs in fields including journalism, politics, public relations, business, law, medicine and education. The possibilities for study and career paths vary as widely as humans themselves.
Sociology or Anthropology?
The Department of Sociology & Anthropology offers separate majors and minors in sociology and anthropology. Both majors provide opportunities for students to take their learning further through field research, internships and study abroad experiences.
Sociology examines human social action, with an emphasis on human diversity, social inequality, and the processes that govern groups, organizations, communities, cultures and nation-states. Starting with a broad foundation of introductory courses, you’ll focus on social categories including age, citizenship, class, family, gender, race and religion.

Anthropology explores the basis of and implications for human diversity by posing general and specific questions about the varieties of human experience. You'll learn about human cultural patterns as you study rituals, politics, economics and worldviews throughout human history and around the globe.
Conduct Research Through On-campus Institutes
Bucknell is home to two institutes that provide support and faculty guidance to students interested in conducting social science research.
The Bucknell Institute for Public Policy provides qualified summer research fellows with $3,000 grants and housing to support full-time, faculty-guided projects.
The Center for Social Science Research trains students in the fundamental methodologies of social science field research through deep connections with community field sites, giving them tools to take on community-based research at Bucknell and beyond.

Coal Region Field Station
Bucknell's interdisciplinary Coal Region Field Station connects students, faculty and staff with communities in the nearby anthracite coal region through projects that foster community revitalization, explore coal region histories and heritage, and imagine future possibilities.
