I interned for the Angel 34 Foundation in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. I worked with the president to develop and assess programs for children battling cancer which included Derek's Camp Flip Flop a 4 day 3 night vacation at the beach, Camp Sweetpea a day camp, Family Days and one day retreats. I also worked in fundraising and donations.
What is the most interesting or important thing you took from your Internship this summer?
I learned so much about how childhood cancer affects a family not only physically, but also emotionally and financially. It was unbelievable to hear that every day 46 children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer. Hearing the families stories about their journey through treatments was very moving. The internship taught me to cherish every moment. I already miss the families I met and worked with. No one in the Angel 34 Foundation gets paid, so it was really great to see every coin and dollar going to support the families and Angel 34's mission that "every child should have an angel during their battle with cancer."
How did the BPIP Fund help make your experience possible?
Without BPIP I would not have been able to take this internship position. It helped me take care of my expenses while working full time.
Why would you recommend the BPIP Fund?
It allows students to work for something they are really passionate about without having to worry about how they will make money, especially in the non-profit or public sectors. It is a great opportunity.
The Angel 34 Foundation installs ICEE machines into children's hospitals across the country. ICEEs help the children stay hydrated and help soothe mouth sores a side effect of chemo and radiation. I had my fair share of ICEEs this summer.
