As the sustainability coordinator, my goal is to foster a culture of sustainability across campus. I work directly with the President’s Sustainability Council towards creating a formal Sustainability Plan that will guide the university towards its climate goals.

Debbie NamugayiThese strategies will span all aspects of campus sustainability: administration and policy, academics, utilities and operations, waste minimization, purchasing, dining, the built environment, transportation, outreach and engagement, diversity and inclusion, and communication. Given Bucknell’s mission of cultivating student leaders that “serve the common good,” one of my first tasks as sustainability coordinator includes creating a student sustainability outreach team that promotes behavior change in a peer-to-peer model. Bucknell has a long history of campus greening initiatives dating back to the 1970s. Communicating the university’s past successes, current projects, and future goals towards climate neutrality will be an essential aspect of my role. Through a robust sustainability program, including education, outreach, and policy initiatives, Bucknell University, a signatory of the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, will become a leader in sustainability and climate action planning.

Sustainability has been my long time passion, and working in higher education gives me an opportunity to communicate the importance of creating a sustainable future to broad audiences and walks of life. Prior to Bucknell University, I was a sustainability associate in the University of Maryland’s Office of Sustainability, where I managed the campus-wide green office program and sustainability outreach team. Before that role, I worked on green building projects in the Washington, DC area as a sustainability analyst at Paladino and Company. I am a LEED Green Associate and hold a Master of Arts in Sustainability from Arizona State University’s School of Sustainability and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Policy from the University of Maryland. I am originally from Uganda and grew up in Montgomery Village, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC.

I am excited to be part of the Bucknell community and collaborate with students, faculty, and staff on a range of sustainability initiatives. Don’t hesitate to email me if you would like to get in touch.

‘ray Bucknell!

Debbie Namugayi
