We offer tutoring for a limited number of introductory math and science courses, and study groups for a much larger group of introductory courses. You may apply to be a tutor, a study group leader, or both. You may tutor or lead a group in any course for which you qualify (earned an A- or above). You may tutor/lead a group for more than one course a semester if you choose.
To join our staff as either a study group leader or tutor, students must either be nominated by or have a recommendation from a professor.
TLC Study Groups meet every week for 90 minutes at a time that you choose. Groups are heterogeneous but organized by professor; any student enrolled in a particular professor's section of a course served by the program is eligible to join a group. You will facilitate group members working together to clarify course material, engage in deep processing techniques for learning, and active problem-solving. There may be some options to co-facilitate occasionally. You can lead more than 1 group in 1 or more subjects per term. Some students choose to lead a group and tutor individually, in the same or in different subjects. Facilitators will also attend a weekly TLC staff meeting for professional development.
Study Group courses vary based on the skills of our facilitators. In 2017-2018, covered courses will likely include:
CHEM 205 (new)
The most up-to-date list will be online at my.bucknell.edu/StudyGroups when registration and groups are active.
You will schedule 60 minutes per week or more for at least two 30-minute appointments in EACH course in which you choose to tutor. Any student in that course will be able to book an appointment with you online; you will be assigned a room in which to work and you will staff that location during your regular hours even if not all your appointments are booked in advance. You will also be expected to spend 30 minutes per week on content review. With appointments and review time, you will work a minimum of 1.5hr/wk per course. We hope to see a mix of both day-time hours and evening hours; you must commit to your regular weekly schedule after training and continue it throughout the semester. Tutors will also attend a weekly TLC staff meeting for professional development.
Courses covered by tutors include:
CHEM 205 (new)
