Established in 1846 as the University at Lewisburg; renamed Bucknell University in 1886 in honor of William Bucknell, a major benefactor. The University is highly selective, private, nonsectarian, coeducational (since 1883), residential and undergraduate, with a small graduate program.

Bucknell's 450-acre campus is occupied year-round. Academic semesters run from September through December and mid-January through mid-May. During the summer, Bucknell hosts business and professional conferences and sports camps.
Outdoor enthusiasts love the abundance of fishing, hiking, cycling and kayaking available in the region. Central Pennsylvania offers innumerable opportunities for recreation.
New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Pittsburgh are all within a three-to-four-hour drive, and Bucknell offers frequent trips to these great cities.
