The Department of Psychology is pleased to announce the Emerging Scholars in Psychology (ESP) Fellowships for summer 2017. The goal of this program is to help maximize the opportunities for students to have transformative research-based educational experiences in psychology.  To be considered for an award, students must have completed their first or second year of college, have transferred to the University and are in their junior year or are rising seniors who came to psychology late.  Awardees will have demonstrated a passion for learning and an eagerness to ask questions and pursue answers, particularly of a psychological nature.

Up to four $1,000 fellowships will be awarded. Awardees will be expected to do the following:

1) Be on campus for at least four weeks during the summer - start date and end date to be arranged between the student and the faculty mentor. There is an expectation for a minimum of 15-20 hours per week working on the project.

2) Work closely with a faculty member (who is also on campus) on a research project.

3) Present the results of their summer research in the Department of Psychology Poster Session (either in the fall or the spring).

If you have questions or would like additional information, contact Professor Ptacek ( or 570.577.1694) or any other faculty member in the department.

Please respond to the following questions in 1-2 double spaced pages. Applications should be emailed to Kay Ocker ( by Monday, April 3.

  1. What draws you to the academic study of psychology?
  2. Describe a research study that you learned about in a psychology course that inspired you to ask a follow up research question. Explain your idea(s).
  3. List up to 3 faculty research sponsors that you are interested in working with. If you have spoken with a professor about working with them this summer (suggested, but not required), include that information.
