Graduating with a degree in economics, Bob Smith was active with Kappa Sigma fraternity, the Christian Association, and The Bucknellian. He played basketball, soccer and tennis.
Long a loyal and tireless worker for the university, he has been a member of the Bucknell Development Council and the executive committee of the Bison Club. In 1982, he was elected to serve on the Bucknell Board of Trustees. As chair of the Board of Trustees, he initiated a number of policies and procedures that enabled the board to more effectively conduct its business. He and his fellow trustees carefully looked down the road and created a much stronger university. He is now chair emeritus.
Along with his wife of 55 years, Margaret Farrell Smith, Class of '41, he has made a significant commitment for the performing arts endowment. The Robert E. and Margaret F. Smith Series for the Performing Arts is an annual event. Smith Hall, dedicated in 1987, recognizes Bob and Margaret for their generous plan of support for Bucknell's future.
As the retired president and CEO of Beaunit Corporation, Bob Smith's non-Bucknell activities have included serving as a director of the North Carolina Textile Manufacturers Association and Textile Distributors Association. He was a trustee of the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, the Burt Reynolds School for the Performing Arts, and the Textile Research Institute.
