Molecular biology was one of the most challenging but rewarding classes that I have taken. I feel that I have already grown as a scientist by taking it.
"I knew that Bucknell's small community feel and first-rate science programs would be a perfect match for me. Attending a university this size has helped me to form the relationships with my professors that I value so much now. Those interactions have challenged me to grow as an intellectual and critical thinker. Professors here always seem to present a new way to think about the class material.
"That's why my favorite class has been Molecular Biology with Professor Mitch Chernin. Rather than lecturing in class about different proteins and their functions in gene expression, Professor Chernin presented us with real experimental results that demonstrated the presence and function of each protein. On our exams, we were presented with data and had to extrapolate conclusions from it. It was one of the most challenging but rewarding classes that I have taken. I feel I have already grown as a scientist by taking it.
"My interactions with other students have also pushed me to re-examine how I think about the world. When I came to Bucknell, I was exposed to people from entirely different backgrounds from my own. Interacting with new people has taught me about myself and my beliefs. I've also experienced this through my involvement with BACES (Bucknell Advancing Communities by Educating & Serving), a student-led alternative Spring Break service program in the Dominican Republic. BACES is able to do uplifting work for others each year, but I think the biggest impact is on the students. The group has nightly discussions that allow people to share their experiences and forces them to move beyond their comfort zones. The culmination of BACES, both the service work and the discussions, have inspired me to rethink my career path and dedicate my life to alleviating the suffering of those less fortunate than me."
