Dance is one of the areas in which Bucknell has really pushed me outside of my comfort zone.

"Bucknell has opened my eyes to new interests. I never thought about doing a service trip before, but this summer I will be participating in the Bucknell in Nicaragua program. It's a three-week experience that focuses on health care, organic agriculture, and sustainable development. I also didn't expect to be involved in theatre at all, but I became the assistant stage manager for the Bucknell Dance Company fall concert and I loved it.
"Dance is one of the areas in which Bucknell has really pushed me outside of my comfort zone. When I was in high school, I mostly did competition dance, which was pretty rigorous. You're always on the counts and you're going for what the judges want. But, there are no judges here. Every year, the Spring Choreographer's Showcase presents the work of students in the dance composition class. It's amazing to see what they choreograph. Instead of focusing on a score, it's about what they have to say through their work. Everyone has equally intriguing and inspiring ideas about what they want to convey to the audience in their piece.
"I've been able to grow personally through my other campus activities as well, especially as a student facilitator for CLIMBucknell. The student facilitators help run a high and low ropes challenge course at the Cowan Conference Center. We learn all the necessary hard skills like belaying and keeping people safe. We learn the soft skills too, like how to deal with group conflict and leading a group through obstacles. Being involved has taught me how to be an effective leader. I'm usually a quiet person but I've learned how to be more outspoken and how to approach people. It's translated to my work within my biology major as well. I've been thinking more about scientific ethics and how that affects what we do in the lab. Now I feel like I can lead a discussion about that — I don't have to wait for someone to ask me about it."
Abigail is from Carmel, Ind.
