Bucknell University will welcome 940 members of the Class of 2018 to five days of Orientation that begin Friday, Aug. 22. Students are scheduled to arrive on campus between 8 a.m. and noon for Move-in Day on Aug. 22.

The newest Bucknellians were selected from 7,864 applicants representing 31 states and the District of Columbia and 31 countries, and includes 30 transfer students, 18 of whom are Bucknell Community College Scholars.

The five-day New Student Orientation Program is designed to ease their transition to the Bucknell community, allowing students to meet with faculty and administrators as well as fellow students.

The extensive activities include academic, traditional, and community building events such as the Convocation and Candlelighting ceremonies, PlayFair and Color Games, and Welcome to the Neighborhood in downtown Lewisburg.

Bucknell will post photos of the activities on Facebook and in a gallery afterward on the Class of 2018 webpage.

Convocation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26. Classes for all students begin Wednesday, Aug. 27.

Lewisburg Day Aug. 25
In addition to Orientation activities on campus, members of the Class of 2018 will be invited to explore downtown Lewisburg on Monday, Aug. 25, from noon to 5 p.m., during Welcome to the Neighborhood. Retailers will welcome first-year and transfer students with a small gift, and restaurants will offer an opportunity to sample the tastes of Lewisburg.

Forty-eight businesses participating in the 13th annual welcome will post names of new students inside their establishments. Students finding their name introduce themselves and receive a gift from that merchant. In the past, gifts have ranged from handmade wool bookmarks and hats to chocolate-candy Bison as well as freshly baked homemade cookies.

Common reading project
Members of the Class of 2018 were asked to read The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid as their first-year common reading project. The book, which will be used for discussion in a number of seminars, relates the life of a young Pakistani man whose seemingly idyllic life in Manhattan is rocked in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attack.

Pre-Orientation Programs

Students are invited to attend one or more of our pre-orientation opportunities, programs designed to help acclimate students and introduce them to fellow classmates, upperclass students and University administrators before orientation begins.
