Marlen Sanchez, the national coordinator for agro-ecology for the Nicaraguan ATC (Rural Workers Association), will speak at Bucknell University on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Elaine Langone Center Gallery Theatre. This talk is free and open to the public.
Sanchez's talk will focus on agro-ecology and how that is seen as essential to food sovereignty, or the right of all people to define their own local, culturally-appropriate food systems. Agro-ecology is a form of low-input sustainable agriculture.
Since 1978, ATC has worked in Nicaragua to strengthen small food producers and the cooperatives with which they work. More than 50,000 farmers are members of ATC, which is the founding member of La Via Campesina, an international farmer and peasant movement.
