"Many who have never had an opportunity of knowing any more about mathematics confound it with arithmetic, and consider it an arid science. In reality, however, it is a science which requires a great deal of imagination, and one of the leading mathematicians of our century states the case quite correctly when he says that it is impossible to be a mathematician without being a poet in soul."

Calculus at Bucknell

Bucknell offers two essentially different introductory calculus courses, both of which presuppose a high school course in pre-calculus. MATH 201 is the first course in the core calculus sequence for mathematics, science, and engineering students; MATH 192 is a one-semester course designed for students in the social sciences.

Did You Know?

The mathematics program at Bucknell has been home to five recipients of the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, awarded to very few mathematics majors nationwide.

Mathematics professors help students develop the habits of exact thinking, purposeful abstraction and disciplined creativity implicit in mathematical accomplishment.

Bucknell teams consistently do well in the annual Putnam Competition, placing as high as 10th among about 400 schools.

The study of mathematics is one of the oldest human endeavors. It is the basic language of the natural sciences and engineering, and it is a vital tool in the social sciences, business and the arts.

Bucknell teams consistently do well in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, placing as high as 9th among over 2000 teams.

Meet all of our faculty

Jeffrey Langford

Assistant Professor

Jeffrey Langford

'I want my students to recognize and appreciate the beauty and usefulness of mathematics, develop a logical, patient approach to solving problems and write and speak clearly about rigorous ideas."

More about Professor Langford
Sharon Garthwaite

Associate Professor

Sharon Garthwaite

"The ability to decode patterns is a key that opens many locks. Whether you're talking about data security, business, medicine, chemistry or even art, seeing patterns means seeing solutions to real world problems."

Peter Brooksbank

Peter Brooksbank

"For me, it’s about sharing the fascination and the beauty of mathematics. Even in a course where most of the students are not there because they think mathematics is beautiful, there is a golden opportunity to open their eyes a little bit, and I love that."
