Money: An Issue for the 21st Century

Income, upward mobility, success, family, security, health and happiness.

Power, unemployment, corporate meltdowns, bailouts and ethics violations.

Scientific advances, infrastructure, promotion of the arts and education.

You can't avoid it. For months, people everywhere have been discussing money and the global economy.

What do you want to know about these complex issues? What do you have to say about them? At Bucknell University, we believe that educated people of the 21st century need to understand pressing world issues through a variety of perspectives and disciplines. You can do just that at a weekend summit called Issues for the 21st Century.

You're invited to campus November 6-7

If you will be a high school senior in Fall 2009, we invite you to explore the topic of money on November 6-7. You’ll meet our faculty and students, spend quality time on our campus and explore money as a world issue with other high school students who are just as curious as you. You'll also receive materials to read and discuss with a virtual team – including a current Bucknell student – before the event.

21st Century Summit Testimonials

"I attended the Bucknell Issues of the 21st Century summit last year and found it to be an exciting and enlightening event. Not only did I meet students like myself who wanted to contemplate and debate global issues I learned a great deal about how culture and religion (among many, many other factors) add to the complexity of global issues...

After dining together, attending lectures, debating in panels and watching documentaries, each team, after further analyzing their respective articles and tying the ideas presented within them to the larger global context based on the concepts presented throughout the summit, was to prepare a PowerPoint presentation to present their findings to the entire groups of students and faculty.

It was a fantastic opportunity and I enjoyed every moment of it (and I even made some friends that I would later take the same classes with here at Bucknell)."

-Alex Ororbia, Bucknell University Class of 2013 and participant in the fall 2008 Issues for the 21st Century conference

As a prospective student, the Issues for the 21st Century Conference was a valuable a truly valuable experience. Many questions that I had, pertaining to Bucknell's campus atmosphere and student body, were answered while I attended the 21st Century Summit. Fortunately, you are given access to some discussion topics prior to the conference, and you become acquainted with the people in your group before you even arrive on campus. Were there some challenging aspects of the summit? Sure. Preparing presentations in a limited amount of time was tough, but 21st Century reinforced my 'gut' feeling that Bucknell was the place for me.
