LEWISBURG, Pa. — Peter Boal, principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, will perform Saturday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m. in the Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University. Tickets are $20.
The evening of "Peter Boal: Solos" premiered in January 2003 at the Joyce Theater in New York City. The program includes "The Man and the Echo," choreographed by Wendy Perron, and "One Body," choreographed by Albert Evans.
"A highlight of this concert is `Waiting for Rain' choreographed by Molissa Fenley. This beautiful solo dance features piano music composed by Robert Ashley which was played in New York, as it will be here, by pianist Lois Svard, professor of music at Bucknell," said Bill Boswell, executive director of the Weis Center.
Boal began studying dance at the School of American ballet at the age of 9, having seen a New York City Ballet (NYCB) production of Balanchine's "The Nutcracker." Two years later he danced the role of the Nutcracker Prince.
He joined the NYCB in 1983 and was promoted to the role of principal dancer in 1989.
In addition to countless roles performed with the NYCB, Boal has appeared as guest artist with the Ballet du Nord, Royal Birmingham, Arizona, and Suzanne Farrell ballet companies, as well as New York's Metropolitan Opera.
Recipient of Dance Magazine's 1996 Artistic Achievement Award, Boal is a faculty member of the School of American Ballet.
Acclaimed internationally for her performances and recordings of contemporary piano music, Svard is the recipient of numerous honors including a 2003 Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship.
With a special interest in American experimental music, she has commissioned, premiered and recorded several works by composers such as Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier, Annea Lockwood, "Blue" Gene Tyranny, Kyle Gann, Jerry Hunt, Kirk Nurock, Elodie Lauten and William Duckworth.
