LEWISBURG, Pa. — Craig Moyer will give the talk, "It's Candy … How Hard can it be?" Tuesday, March 30, at 7 p.m. in the Gardner Lecture Hall of the Dana Engineering Building at Bucknell.

The talk, which is free to the public, is part of the annual Ralph B. Derr Lecture series, sponsored by the chemical engineering department.

Director of capital programs with the Hershey Foods Corporation, Moyer will take "a somewhat lighthearted look at the chemistry, physics and mechanics of manufacturing an American icon, the Hershey Kiss."

According to Moyer, making a Kiss takes more than squirting a measure of chocolate onto a flat surface.

The seemingly simple piece of chocolate candy is "a complex geometrical shape, arising from internal flow properties of chocolate as influenced by the peculiarities of sugar, cocoa and milk protein particles suspended in a fat," which cause chocolate to be anything but normal.

During his visit to campus, Moyer also will give two technical talks to classes.

The Ralph B. Derr Memorial Lectureships are given annually in the department of chemical engineering at Bucknell by a person in the profession who is aware of the need for and the benefits to be derived from the close cooperation between industry/government and the university.

Established in 1970, the lectureship honors Ralph Derr, a 1950 graduate of Bucknell and former chief chemical engineer in the refining division of Alcoa in Pittsburgh.
