New Frontiers of Knowledge

An opportunity for high school students in grades 9, 10 and 11

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably been asked by a counselor or teacher to consider applying to participate in a program called New Frontiers of Knowledge. Why you? You have shown an impressive commitment to your education, and those around you believe you have what it takes to succeed in college. New Frontiers can help you get there.

What is New Frontiers?

New Frontiers is a joint collaboration of select high schools and Bucknell University, a liberal arts college on the east coast. This program is designed to give you opportunities to explore exciting ways of learning and prepare for success in college. The program consists of:

  • An event to be held October 21-25 in Chicago: Beginning October 9th you will be contacted by a Bucknell student to begin preparing for the conference. As part of the preparation you will work on line with other high school students reading and discussing materials selected by Faculty from several academic disciplines examining food from a variety of perspectives. On October 21st Faculty members from Bucknell will come to Chicago to lead students in a discussion about of the materials they have read on-line and related pressing issues that affect everyone in the world. See below for an explanation of why food is an important topic for discussion.

    See the event schedule here.

  • Connections with college students: You’ll have many opportunities, before and after the event, talk online with college students, who can talk with you about the event and your thoughts and ideas regarding what you learn. The students will also be available if you need advice about preparing for and applying to college.
  • Guidance from college faculty members: Professors from Bucknell and Susquehanna will come to Chicago to lead discussions with you and your peers. You’ll get a sense of what it’s like to be a college student at a liberal arts college.
  • Friendship with peers as smart as you are: At the event, you’ll get to meet high school students who are just as interested in learning as you are.
  • Support over the next few years: If you apply and are accepted you’ll be expected to continue working on-line with your team throughout the year studying a variety of topics and developing a team project to be presented at the 2010 New Frontiers Conference. This way you will have opportunities to stay connected with college students and faculty as you continue through high school.

This program is free of charge for participants, including meals and educational materials.

Why discuss food in an academic setting?

Around the world, food nourishes human beings. It brings us pleasure. It anchors many of our
traditions and rituals. And its distribution and consumption affect economies and cultures, climate and land use, science and technology. In the 21st century, we need to understand food better so that we can bring positive change to the world.

If you join us for New Frontiers, you will:

  • Participate in discussions led by Bucknell University professors
  • Discuss food-related issues with other high school students
  • Learn how literature and language, economics, sociology, biology and physics can shed light on pressing world issues.
  • Become familiar with the learning expectations of selective liberal arts private colleges
  • Develop new friendships with people committed to learning and success

Registration ends October 1st . Participants will receive instructions to access materials to read and discuss with a virtual team – including a current Bucknell student – by October 9th.
