Department and Program Learning Objectives

Majors in Classics will be able to:

Understand the basic concepts of classical civilization: historical outlines; the evolution of societies; the development and functions of literary genres, architectural and artistic trends, and their reflection of social values and ideology. (1,2,4,5,6,8)

Demonstrate language skills in Latin and Greek, both at the basic and advanced levels:

Basic:  ability to analyze grammatical structure, and to read and translate appropriate passages. (1,3)Advanced:  ability to conduct literary analysis and research. (1,2,3,7,8,9)

Demonstrate a sense of historical perspective that allows them to place themselves within an historical context.  (2,3,4,5,6)

Demonstrate effective oral and written communication in the disciplinary context of classics. (7)

Recognize that different theoretical perspectives can be used to analyze cultural achievement. (2,4,5,6,9)
