Group counseling gathers approximately 5-10 students to meet weekly. These sessions are led by Counseling & Student Development Center staff.

This form of counseling can offer unique opportunities to learn about yourself. Group provides a place to share your concerns, try out new behaviors, and learn more about how you interact with others.

Group participants are encouraged to share their reactions to other group members, the leaders, and the material discussed in the group meeting. The group leaders help to create a safe environment and to encourage group members' interaction. Creating this safe atmosphere includes protecting members' privacy and facilitating open, honest, and respectful discussions.

All potential group members must schedule a preliminary meeting with the group leader(s), which provides an opportunity to get acquainted, ask questions, and discuss expectations.

Be Your Best You

The group will provide students an opportunity to address a myriad of presenting concerns in a supportive and empathic space.

Members may discuss issues such as loneliness, relationship problems, grief and loss, struggles to feel good about themselves, balancing different stresses, academic challenges, adjustment concerns, and managing intense feelings. Group members will learn how to support one another while simultaneously working on their own unique challenges and concerns.

The group can be especially useful for people who want to explore personal growth, gain awareness, and enhance functioning in interpersonal relationships. As members get to know each other and feel more comfortable in the group, they will be encouraged to practice new behaviors that should allow them to become more genuine and confident versions of themselves.

Students who are open-minded and challenge themselves to give and receive honest opinions will benefit most from this group. Each group will have between six and ten members.
