Personal Electric Vehicle Guidelines
Including e-scooters, e-skateboards, e-unicycles
Bucknell supports the use of Personal Electric Vehicles (PEVs) by all members of the University community to alleviate parking concerns and to align with University sustainability initiatives. While PEVs are welcome on campus, PEV users must still operate their PEVs safely considering both the rider and other members of the University community. State regulation restricts the use of PEVs on streets and sidewalks that are maintained by the Borough of Lewisburg and run through the University campus and adjacent neighborhoods (see map). In an effort to balance PEV safety issues with support for use of PEVs, Bucknell has introduced the following PEV Guidelines with an expectation of voluntary compliance by PEV users.
Please note: PEVs do not include personal electric devices in use to accommodate persons with mobility restrictions.
- Except for streets maintained by the Borough of Lewisburg, PEVs may be operated on hard surfaces on campus except the Malesardi Quad. Please do not ride PEVs in grassy areas or in any campus building or athletic facility. You may walk your PEV into a building to be temporarily stored in a residential room or personal office.
- When riding in the street, please do not obstruct other vehicle traffic and stay to the right. You must obey all stop and yield signs when riding in the street and for your own safety and the protection of other drivers, please walk your PEV across all intersections and at crosswalks. This is especially true at the intersection of Moore Avenue and 7th Street where vehicle and pedestrian traffic tends to be dense.
- Please only ride your PEV on the sidewalk or walking path if no adjacent street is available. Remember that pedestrians always have the right of way, ride on the right and give an audible warning when passing a pedestrian. Your speed when riding on a sidewalk or path should be reasonable based on the other pedestrians or vehicles in the area.
- PEVs may be hard to see in low light conditions so PEVs should be equipped with front and rear lights. You should also consider wearing lights or reflective clothing after sunset, before dawn or in foggy or hazy weather conditions.
- For your own safety, PEVs should not be operated if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, when you are wearing headphones or earbuds, while you are checking your phone or if you are juggling various items. You should also avoid risky tandem riding, stunt riding, trick riding and/or racing.
- PEVs should be locked to bike racks when possible and may not be parked in a space that will block entry into or out of a building, or that inhibits access for individuals with disabilities.
- When charging a PEV, the users must be present and use of extension cords is not permitted to avoid fire hazards.
