Title IX and Nondiscrimination

Bucknell University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, age, veteran status, gender identity, marital status, sexual orientation, gender expression or any characteristic protected by law, in its educational programs and activities, admissions, or employment, as required by Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other applicable laws and University policies.

Sex discrimination includes sexual harassment, sexual assault and relationship violence. If a Faculty or Staff member becomes aware of an incident, they are required to immediately report the incident to the Title IX Coordinator. The University offers a number of resources for students, faculty and staff who have suffered from sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault or relationship violence.

What is Title IX?

Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972, 20 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq., prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities operated by recipients of federal financial assistance. Sex discrimination includes sexual harassment, which encompasses sexual assault and other forms of sexual misconduct. Bucknell University complies with Title IX and does not discriminate on the basis of sex in education programs and activities, admissions or employment.

What is Title VI?

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 34 C.F.R. 100 et seq., is a federal law that protects persons from discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. Accordingly, a recipient of financial assistance from the Department of Education must provide access to their programs and services on a nondiscriminatory basis.

Bucknell complies with all applicable federal and state laws regarding nondiscrimination and equal opportunity.

A student, faculty or staff member can request a measure even if they choose not to move forward with an investigation. Measures include but are not limited to:

  • Access to counseling or other confidential services

Faculty & Staff Reporting Requirements

Faculty and staff members: If information regarding an incident of discrimination or harassment, including sexual misconduct and relationship violence is shared with you, you are required to complete the Discrimination and Harassment Reporting Form within 24 hours of receiving the report. This information will enable the Title IX office to reach out to the impacted student and offer numerous resources and support options.

Confidentiality

The Title IX coordinator will try to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the individuals involved in any report of alleged discrimination and harassment, including sexual misconduct or relationship violence to the extent possible and allowed by law. The Title IX coordinator cannot guarantee confidentiality, however, and must evaluate any request based on the University's responsibility to provide a safe and nondiscriminatory environment.
