BIPP Grant Opportunities
The Bucknell Institute for Public Policy (BIPP) is committed to supporting faculty development and scholarship.
To advance these ends, the Institute offers grants to full-time faculty for scholarly research projects and curricular development. These grants will fund projects in the area of public policy.
All full-time faculty in all departments who have an affiliation with the University are eligible to apply. Grant applications will be accepted on a rolling basis beginning now and awards of up to $1,500 per application will be given out.
Scholarly Development Grants
Include in your proposal a description of the project that includes the following information (a maximum of two single-spaced pages, excluding the bibliography):
- The question or thesis of your research.
- The methodology and how your work builds on existing scholarship in the field or fields involved.
- The significance of your study in terms of the results you anticipate and the contribution your work will make to public policy.
- Your expectations for publication.
- If the research involves human subjects, note your compliance with requirements for such research.
- A bibliography of relevant material.
- The amount of funds requested and a budget, which may include expenses such as fees for consultants, student research assistance, travel or the acquisition of resource materials not generally available. Faculty may use the funds for a summer stipend.
- A detailed work plan.
Curricular Development Grants
In your proposal include a description of the proposed course, including the following details (a maximum of two single-spaced pages):
- How the course fits within the goals of the Institute.
- The gaps in the curriculum that the course fills.
- How often you anticipate teaching the course in the future (we ask, at minimum, the course be offered twice in the next three years).
- A rationale for development funds (i.e. does this course require a significant change in pedagogy, a new area of teaching, etc.).
- Acknowledgement that the course can be listed as an elective for the public policy minor.
- The amount of funds requested and a budget, which may include expenses such as fees for consultants, student research assistance, travel or the acquisition of resource materials not generally available. Faculty may use the funds for a summer stipend.
- A detailed work plan.
Additional Required Materials
- A current curriculum vitae for each participant.
- List of other Bucknell grants applied for and past grants received.
Review Criteria
Proposals will be prioritized on the following criteria:
- Suitability of the project for BIPP goals.
- Contribution and significance of the project.
- Clarity of the rationale and the objectives.
- Feasibility of the research or curricular development effort.
- Effectiveness of the methodology or procedure.
- Indication of expected results: course(s), publication or other effects.

End-of-Grant Responsibilities
At the end of the funded project, all grant recipients are required to submit a descriptive assessment of their summer activity to the director of the institute. Grant recipients may be asked to speak at a BIPP function and/or contribute to the BIPP blog/website.
Faculty awarded scholarly research grants should:
- Notify BIPP of presentations and/or publications resulting from the work.
- Acknowledge BIPP’s support in the resulting publications.
- Supply BIPP with a copy of those publications.
- If possible, provide a working paper or policy brief for BIPP’s working paper series.
Faculty awarded curricular development grants are expected to:
- Offer the course at least twice in the following three academic years.
- List the course as an elective or methods course for the public policy minor.
