Mildred Martin Library

The Mildred Martin Poetry Library & Lounge is located in the Stadler Center for Poetry, in the basement of Bucknell Hall. The library functions as a reading room and specializes in books of contemporary poetry as well as materials that enable the study of poetry.

While materials in the library do not circulate, the library and lounge are open to the campus community and provide a welcoming space for students, faculty and staff to browse the collection and congregate.

A Brief History of the Mildred Martin Library

Professor Emerita Mildred A. Martin, was a member of Bucknell’s Department of English from 1940 until her retirement in 1972. During her tenure at Bucknell, Martin had a profound and lasting impact on generations of students, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Philip Roth ’54.

In the spring of 1990, the Poetry Library & Lounge, located in the Stadler Center, was named in honor of Professor Martin.

At the dedication ceremony, Bucknell president Gary Sojka remarked that, “By associating Professor Martin’s name with the Poetry Library & Lounge here in the Stadler Center, we are recognizing the central role she played in developing an atmosphere conducive to the support of poetry at Bucknell. Her influence laid the groundwork for the unique cluster of poetry programs that subsequently evolved at Bucknell through the enlightened generosity of Jack Stadler ’40 and other alumni, the commitment of our faculty, and the creative awakening of our students.”
