The Language and Cultural Immersion Scholars Program is an exciting opportunity for Freeman College of Management students to explore and engage with different cultures and languages during their time at Bucknell. Throughout the program, students complete in-depth and immersive coursework in the language and culture of their choice. The program also takes students beyond the classroom, immersing them in the culture of study through internships or study abroad experiences.

This program is open to any Freeman College of Management student interested in pursuing the study of a language and its culture not only within a classroom setting, but through real-world, immersive opportunities. Students will work closely with both a Freeman College of Management professor as well as a language professor who will help the student navigate the requirements and assist with finding a study abroad program or internship that fits with the student's language and culture of choice.
Students can select an area of study from any of the language departments and programs that currently participate in this program:
Arabic & Arab World Studies | Modern Hebrew & Jewish Studies |
Chinese (East Asian Studies) | Italian Studies |
Classics & Ancient Mediterranean Studies | Japanese (East Asian Studies) |
French & Francophone Studies | Russian Studies |
German Studies | Spanish |
Students who complete the program will also earn a minor in the language of study, pending approval from the director of the language program or department.
Since this program builds on existing degree requirements, there is no formal application process. To learn more or to express your interest in the program, reach out to a Freeman College of Management and/or a language professor.
Due to the immersion requirement (study abroad and/or internship), we recommend expressing your interest in the program early. Reach out to a faculty member today to begin your journey into the Language and Cultural Immersion Scholars Program.
The Language and Cultural Immersion Scholars Program builds on the existing Freeman College of Management language requirements, in which students must complete an assessment to determine placement into the appropriate course level.
Starting from their determined placement level, students pursuing this program must complete six courses in their language of study, including two years (four courses) of general language core courses and two language and cultural immersion electives. Upon completion of coursework, students will complete a language and cultural immersion experience in the form of an internship, study abroad program or both. This immersive portion is designed to give students the invaluable opportunity to apply their new language skills and cultural understanding in a real-world setting.
Requirements:
Language Core Classes | Four sequential courses* (e.g. 101, 102, etc.) |
Language and Cultural Immersion Courses | Two electives** |
Language and Cultural Immersion Experiences | Study Abroad and/or Internship |
*Language core courses begin at a level determined by the student's language assessment.
**Electives in some programs and departments include 100-level courses.
See the Specific Course Requirements section for more detailed information on specific courses and requirements.
The Language and Cultural Immersion Scholars Program will provide students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in their culture of choice with study abroad options. Through Bucknell In and other Bucknell-approved programs, students have a lot of great choices when it comes to finding a study abroad option that fits with their language and culture of choice.
Students can also work with their professors to seek out study abroad opportunities that are outside of the current Bucknell In options.
Students may choose to participate in an internship relevant to their language of study as their cultural immersion experience, instead of or in addition to studying abroad. Bucknell has a number of existing and ongoing internship options to choose from, or students can work with their professors to seek out other opportunities.
The courses listed in the following sections do not represent a comprehensive course list. Offerings may change based on semester schedules and/or availability. Reach out to a professor from one of the programs or departments listed to discuss your options.
