Feb 2, 2011: Campus mourns loss of a colleague
Dear Colleagues:
The campus community mourns the passing of Michael W. Moohr, 68, who died on Monday, January 31, 2011. Michael was an Associate Professor of Economics who joined the University in 1975. He served as chair of the Economics Department from 1990 to 1994 and received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1983.
To quote Michael's colleagues in the Economics Department, "Michael was exceedingly popular among students interested in economics and economic history. His courses consistently filled to beyond capacity, and his best students would return semester after semester. Michael's classes often combined economic theories with storied anecdotes gained from his many years of experiencing the world. His students found him engaging, witty and compassionate. In many cases, Michael's commitment to his students remained strong long after graduation. Michael showed a keen interest in the careers of his students and was available to lend a helping hand whenever needed. His dedication to his students was undeniably the driving force behind Michael's long and distinguished career as a mentor and educator at Bucknell.
As a colleague, Michael brought wisdom, vision and, at times, humor to departmental decision making. His commitment to the education of students from disadvantaged minority groups was unwavering. His energetic support for strengthening the international perspective of economics was a constant throughout his years at Bucknell. He will be missed."
Michael is survived by his wife, Michele, and his children Megan Hoye and Roger Stover of Lewisburg.
Friends will be received at Rooke Chapel from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 4 and from 10:00 a.m. to noon Saturday, February 5, followed by the funeral at noon. The family will provide flowers. Details for memorial contributions will be announced later. The family is being assisted by the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and Saint Louis Streets, Lewisburg.
On behalf of the entire Bucknell community, I extend our deepest sympathies to Michael's family as well as all who knew him at Bucknell.
