March 15, 2019: A brief reflection...

Dear Bucknellians,

Tragically, we have become all too familiar with acts of hate-fueled violence and terrorism, whether they occur at home or abroad. While the horrific shootings at two mosques in New Zealand that killed nearly 50 people are particularly appalling, the sad reality is that there are daily reminders that evil in the world persists.

For those of you who might know that we have students enrolled in off-campus education programs in New Zealand I can happily report that all are safe.

Like other hate crimes we've witnessed, this attack targeted a specific group of people gathered in worship. To echo what I've stated in the past — everything about this tragedy stands in the starkest contrast to the values we hold dear. As we continue our collective efforts to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for all of our communities, I hope you'll join me in keeping the members of our Muslim community in particular in your thoughts and prayers today.

I remain steadfast in my belief that an education can transform lives and be a powerful tool in combating discrimination and hatred of all kinds. Let us continue our endeavor of educating students to serve the common good, promote justice and create a better world — for all.

My best,

John
