Nov. 1, 2023: Commitment to a Respectful Community
Dear Bucknellians,
As president of this institution — one that is committed to a welcoming living and learning environment for all members of this community — I was outraged and profoundly disappointed to learn that a swastika was recently found in a residence hall on campus. Swift action was taken against this abhorrent act of antisemitism, and the conduct process has been concluded. Hateful speech, acts or symbols — directed toward any individual or group — have no place at Bucknell and will carry consequences. Let me be clear that these acts can create pain and fear in our community, and are totally unacceptable on this campus.
This is a sobering reminder that the Bucknell community must stand firm in its unequivocal commitment to the critical work of combating hate and discrimination. While the University champions freedom of expression, we swiftly and seriously address all allegations of speech or actions motivated by hate.
If you experience such an act, we encourage you to report it according to the University's Bias Incident Policy. Additionally, please note that alleged hate crimes are subject to prosecution by law enforcement. Detailed information about related Pennsylvania laws can be found here.
We expect everyone at Bucknell to uphold the University's commitment to mutual respect, and to building a community where each person's humanity is seen, heard and valued — even in the most difficult and painful times.
Sincerely,
John C. Bravman
President
