Nov. 9, 2016: A Brief Reflection
Dear Bucknellians,
During the 2016 presidential campaign we experienced levels of contention and divisiveness unlike anything in recent history. The election season caused uncertainty and deep concern for many, regardless of political affiliation.
Reflecting on this time in history, I turned to the wisdom of Bucknell's mission statement, which calls on us to foster an environment in which students:
"... develop intellectual maturity, personal conviction and strength of character, informed by a deep understanding of different cultures and diverse perspectives."
This morning, both of the candidates and President Obama called for national unity and healing. As we move through the semester and beyond, we must reaffirm our commitment to engaging with one another based on a foundation of mutual respect and genuine community. Absent that, our mission cannot be fulfilled.
