November 2, 2012: Amy Foerster appointed Bucknell General Counsel

It is a pleasure to announce that Amy Foerster will be our new General Counsel. Amy emerged as the leading candidate from a national search that attracted a very large and strong pool of candidates, and brings to Bucknell extensive experience in higher education law. Amy is a nationally renowned expert on Title IX and related matters, and is deeply informed on the complex legal matters affecting higher education today. Amy will join the Operations and Management Group upon her arrival, and will report to me. We are delighted she will be joining our team.

Amy will start at Bucknell on January 1, 2013. At that time, General Counsel Wayne Bromfield will become Senior Legal Adviser to the President, as he is uniquely informed on litigation matters already underway and on a wide variety of local issues. Wayne will continue in this role full-time until this litigation is concluded, likely during 2013. I am grateful to Wayne for agreeing to serve the University in this critically important way as we resolve these litigation matters. This will also help assure Amy’s smooth transition to Bucknell amid the many legal complexities every university faces on a regular basis.

Amy comes to us from Saul Ewing, a major mid-Atlantic law firm, where she is co-chair of the Higher Education Practice and a member of the Commercial Litigation and Labor, Employment and Employee Benefits practices. As these roles indicate, her expertise is considerable, involving a range of areas in commercial and employment law. As co-chair of the Higher Education Practice, Amy provides legal services to higher education institutions across the country, specializing in Title IX (sexual misconduct), student discipline and codes, information security, employment issues, and more. She is a frequent invited speaker at national conferences on Title IX and other federal compliance matters. We are extraordinarily fortunate that she will be joining Bucknell.

Prior to joining Saul Ewing, Amy was a senior deputy attorney general with the Civil Litigation Section of the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, and before that with the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Office of Chief Counsel, serving as primary counsel to the Office of Postsecondary and Higher Education.

My thanks to Vice President for Finance and Administration Dave Surgala for leading this successful search, and to the other members of committee for their time and insight during this process: Wayne Bromfield, Michael Cover, Abe Feuerstein, Kathy Graham, John Hardt, Marcia Hoffman, Craig Kochel, Susan Lantz, Margot Vigeant, and Will Persing (student).

Please join me in welcoming Amy to Bucknell.

Sincerely,

John
