Oct. 10, 2023: Recent Events in Israel and Gaza

Dear Bucknellians,

In recent days, violence has escalated in Israel and the Gaza Strip, directly impacting millions of people in the region. As a diverse and interconnected community, we at Bucknell are filled with sorrow for all of those suffering in the devastation enveloping the region, even as we fear what lies ahead.

The loss of life is horrific, and our hearts are with members of our community with family and friends who are affected. We recognize that many Buckellians are deeply wounded by current events. The following campus resources may be helpful to those seeking support.

  • Our University chaplains, representing the Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Orthodox Christian and Protestant faiths, are available to meet with any students, faculty and staff and will provide ongoing communal processing spaces. They may be reached at kdn004@bucknell.edu or 570-577-1592.
  • Students may also contact the Counseling & Student Development Center to speak with a counselor. Please see the center's web page for information about counseling options or call 570-577-1604.
  • Faculty and staff may wish to contact the Employee Assistance Program, which connects benefits-eligible employees with licensed professional counselors at no cost.

The Office of Religious & Spiritual Life will host a campus vigil for peace on Weds., Oct. 11, at 8 p.m. on the Science Quad. This will be an opportunity for our campus to gather to mourn the loss of life, pray for peace and be in community.

As an institution of higher education, Bucknell is committed to analysis and discussion of challenging topics, as well as open dialogue and respect for all people. We are also committed to helping each other in times of need. As classes resume after fall break, I encourage you to look out for those who may need support.

Sincerely,

John C. Bravman
President
