Oct. 13, 2023: Further Thoughts on Israel and Gaza

Dear Bucknellians,

The attacks committed by the terrorist organization Hamas have been reported in graphic detail. We recognize these unspeakable atrocities for what they are, and unequivocally condemn the execution and kidnapping of men, women and children.

And now a massive conflict involving the realities of modern warfare has escalated, leading to more devastation that has already deeply affected us, especially those with friends and family who are directly impacted. We know that millions in Israel and Gaza will confront deep human tragedy, a result of all the complexities attendant to decades of politics and history.

In these dark moments, we must still find reason to hope. At Wednesday night's campus vigil for peace, I joined hundreds of Bucknellians who gathered to honor the deceased and wounded and to pray for an end to the violence and the hate — all of it. There I experienced the best of Bucknell as I know it: people of different backgrounds, unified in sorrow and seeking common ground.

Recognizing that we are not immune to discord here at Bucknell, I urge you to keep listening and learning, from each other and from reputable sources of news and information. As students, faculty and staff at a university rooted in the liberal arts, we know the importance of communicating constructively and respectfully about challenging topics and considering perspectives that may differ from our own, while keeping foremost in mind our shared humanity — no matter how divergent our views and opinions may be.

Finally, please remember that campus resources are available to students and employees who may need extra support at this time — information is provided in my previous campus message.

Since Bucknell's founding, our shared values have helped us navigate difficult times. Together, we must continue to seek peace and uphold one another as we find strength in and across our communities.

Sincerely,

John C. Bravman
President
